Clinical Data Analytics and Applied Medical Informatics Research
Afshar/Joyce Lab
Mission:
The lab of Drs. Majid Afshar and Cara Joyce is a NIH-funded lab to conduct clinical research from electronic health records with applications in artificial intelligence to accomplish three goals: (1) health outcomes and health inequities research; (2) applied predictive modelling; and (3) high throughput phenotyping. Our lab brings together physician-scientists, biostatisticians, and computer scientists to provide a multidisciplinary approach to medical informatics research with expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, and statistical learning for electronic health records data. Our aim is to provide research that is operational and may be implemented in real-time. We have developed partnerships with other academic centers for validation of our derived models and we currently participate in activities within our Chicago-area clinical data research network (CAPriCORN), NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award program (CTSA), and Loyola’s Center for Health Outcomes and Informatics Research (CHOIR). Beyond providing sophisticated implementation of predictive analytics, our team’s mission is to align with the priorities of Loyola and the Healthy Chicago 2.0 plan to ensure decision-making algorithms promote health equity and do not perpetuate the hidden biases of the health systems at large.

Dmitry Dligach, PhD
- Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Public Health Sciences, Loyola University School of Medicine.
- The overarching goal of Dr. Dligach's research is developing methods for automatic semantic analysis of texts. His work spans such areas of computer science as natural language processing, machine learning, and data mining. Most recently his research has focused on semantic analysis of clinical texts. He works both on method development and applications.
