Loyola researcher presents one of the top studies by young scientists at Shock Society

MAYWOOD, Ill. A study by Michael Chen, an MD/PhD student at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, was selected as one of the top studies by young scientists during the annual meeting of the North American/United States Shock Society.

Chen’s study was one of only six abstracts accepted for oral presentation in a special symposium by and for young investigators at the society’s 2014 Annual Conference on Shock, June 7-10 in Charlotte, N.C.

Chen also received the prestigious Mohammed Sayeed travel award to attend the meeting. The award is named after the late Mohammed Sayeed, PhD, a founding member and past president of the Shock Society and a professor in Loyola’s Burn & Shock Trauma Research Institute.

Chen presented a study titled “Alcohol Potentiates Post Burn Intestinal Ischemia Through Shifts in Fluid Compartments.” Senior author is Elizabeth J. Kovacs, PhD, director of research in Loyola’s Burn & Shock Trauma Research Institute.

The Shock Society promotes basic and clinical research in the molecular, cellular and systemic aspects of shock and trauma.
