Med student grateful for scholarship that eases financial burden of her studies

Maria Theodorou says she appreciates that Stritch School of Medicine pairs classroom teaching with clinical experience in the first year of medical school.
Second-year med student who is grateful for the challenges of medical school acknowledges how much more difficult it would be without a scholarship.

A second-year student at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maria Theodorou's days begin early and end late.

But she couldn’t imagine having it any other way.

"At Stritch it’s a great deal of class time and studying, but I love the environment, the community feeling and the homelike atmosphere,” said the 22-year-old Maria. "Also, being able to have classroom and clinical experience from the first year makes a big difference in keeping me motivated and excited to be here every day."

Maria credits the support and encouragement she receives from her mother and father, Roblyn and Antonis, for helping her to endure the rigors of a medical school education.

"My parents have always supported me from Day One,” Maria said. “They’re always there through good days and bad."

She also thanks the financial support from the John W. and Rosemary Croghan Medical Student Scholarship Fund for helping her to finance her education.

"I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart; from the bottom of my family’s heart to the Croghan family for helping me to finance my medical school education here at Loyola," Maria said.
