Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine Announces Endowed Professorships Including First Robert C. Flanigan, MD, Professor in Urology

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine is proud to announce the appointment of three endowed professorships. Marcus Quek, MD, FACS, is the first Robert C. Flanigan, MD, Professor in Urology. In addition, Simon Kaja, PhD, has been named the Dr. John P. and Therese E. Mulcahy Professor in Ophthalmology and Stephen MacLeod, BDS, MD, FACS, has been named the Joseph R. and Louise Ada Jarabak Chair.

“Endowed professorships are the most prestigious faculty appointments at Stritch. They help support our outstanding faculty members, allowing them to continue to provide excellence in teaching and research that enhances health care,” said Linda Brubaker, MD, MS, interim provost, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Campus and dean and chief diversity officer at Stritch.

Dr. Quek is the first clinician to be named the Robert C. Flanigan, MD, Professor in Urology which was established by friends and grateful patients of Dr. Flanigan. It honors his contributions to the field of urology including research and patient care. It also acknowledges his leadership in the Department of Urology where he continues to serve as chair.

Dr. Quek has been a member of Loyola’s urology department since 2005. During his tenure, he has held numerous leadership positions including medical director for urology at the Loyola Outpatient Center, co-chair of the robotics sub-committee, perioperative executive committee, and chair of Loyola’s urology simulation committee. In addition, he is on the board of directors at the Chicago Urologic Society and is a National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Investigator. He is on the editorial board of Case Reports in Surgery and Journal of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Kaja is the Dr. John P. and Therese E. Mulcahy Professor in Ophthalmology which was created by the Loyola Board of Trustees in 1988 to honor the legacy of Dr. Mulcahy, a leader in the ophthalmology field. The Mulcahys were passionate about advancing medical education through Stritch. Dr. Kaja joins Loyola from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, Department of Ophthalmology. He is the editor and chief of Journal of Biology and Medicine and on the editorial boards for Asian Journal of Neurosciences, Webmed Central Plus, and Austin Journal of Clinical Ophthalmology.

Through his work in oral health, Dr. MacLeod is continuing the legacy of Dr. Joseph R. Jarabak, an innovator in the practice of dentistry. The Jarabak endowed chair was created to honor Dr. Jarabak and his wife, Louise Ada, and is given to a proven leader in the field of dentistry.  

Dr. MacLeod is the director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Medicine at Loyola University Health System. He has written several book chapters on oral and maxillofacial surgery and has been published in numerous academic journals. He is on the editorial board for the Craniomazillofacial, Trauma and Reconstruction and British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is the North American Regional Dental Adviser and International Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

All three will be honored at the Health Sciences Campus's faculty convocation held on September 21, 2015.
