Professional Development Milestone

(*This milestone is not required for MD/PhD students)

This is required for PhD students matriculating Fall 2017 or later. Students matriculating Fall 2017 or later will have accounts automatically generated and will receive an email with more information.

Students who matriculated before Fall 2017 have the option to complete this Milestone. If previously enrolled in the Honors in Leadership in Science Program, you may apply activities to this milestone. To request an account, please email Dr. Emily Anderson at emanderson@luc.edu.

1. Complete Individual Development Plan (IDP) by the end of first (Fall) semester
Complete the IDP. Remember to save your logon and password info so that you can access it in the future. (Students will be asked to indicate in Taskstream that they have completed their IDP, but not required to upload it.)

The following four requirements can be completed in any order but all must be completed by your defense date. The IDP website has more information about careers, networking, attending events, and setting goals that will help you set goals and complete them.

2.  Set one professional development SMART Goal that you will work on independently.
Complete the SMART Goal exercise.  How to set a SMART Goal:

S – Specific – Is it focused and unambiguous?
M – Measureable – Could someone determine whether or not you achieved this goal?
A – Action-oriented – Did you specify the action you will take?
R – Realistic – Considering difficulty and timeframe, is this goal attainable?
T – Time-bound – Did you specify a deadline?

3.  Set one networking goal (e.g., informational interview with a scientist)
When goal is completed briefly answer the following questions:
Who did you meet with? What did you do?
What did you learn? How will you apply what you learned?
How, if at all, did you follow up?

4. Participate in a professional event outside Loyola (e.g., workshop, seminar, national meeting)
After event, briefly answer the following questions:
Describe the event. What did you do?
What did you learn? How will you apply what you learned?
How, if at all, did you follow up?

5. Participate in a service activity
What did you do?
What did you learn? How will you apply what you learned?
How, if at all, did you follow up?

Replaces Honors in Leadership in Science program

These four requirements can be completed in any order but all must be completed by your graduation date.
